Dr. Malhotra completed his undergraduate studies in Neurobiology at Yale University, after which he attended the Duke University School of Medicine and then completed residency and subspecialty fellowship training in Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University. He is board certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.
Dr. Malhotra treats many acute and chronic pain conditions with a focus on preventing the development of chronic pain after surgery or injury. He has a particular interest in ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided procedures to diagnose and treat spine, nerve, and joint pains. These include medial branch blocks, facet blocks, pulsed and ablative radiofrequency, epidural steroid injections, transforaminal injections, caudal injections, joint injections (sacroiliac, shoulder, knee, hip), nerve injections (occipital, supraorbital, infraorbital, trigeminal, brachial plexus and arm branches, lumbar plexus and leg branches, ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric, genitofemoral, transversus abdominis plane, intercostals, suprascapular), trochanteric bursa injections, carpal and tarsal tunnel injections, muscle-specific trigger point injections, botulinum toxin, sympathetic plexus blocks (stellate, lumbar, celiac, superior hypogastric, ganglion impar), and spinal cord stimulation.
In addition to interventions, Dr. Malhotra strives to optimize medication regimens and physical activity using evidence-based guidelines in order to return patients to their maximal level of functioning.
Dr. Malhotra has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews, and textbook chapters on pain and anesthesiology and has presented lectures, posters, and led problem-based discussion groups on these topics at several meetings including the American Society of Anesthesiologists national meeting and the New York Society of Anesthesiologists Post-Graduate Assembly.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP)
Dr. Malhotra conducts clinical research on risk factors and interventions that influence acute postsurgical pain and the development of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP). He is particularly interested in the early diagnosis and treatment of pain conditions to prevent the development of intractable chronic pain.
