Clinical Trials Unit Acute Coronary Syndromes Coronary Artery Disease

The Cardiovascular Institute is involved in clinical research projects spanning the spectrum from elucidating pathophysiological mechansims to collaboration in multicenter trials of new therapies.\r\nBuilding on our experience in previous trials of novel antithrombotic agents, current projects in the acute setting include:\r\n

\r\n\r\n
  • combination of platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist plus unfractionated heaprin versus GP IIb/IIIa antagonist plus low molecular weight heparin to determine the optimal antithrombotic strategy
  • \r\n
  • oral platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist. This trial involves patients with previosu peripheral of neurovascular disease in addition to those with coronary artery disease.
  • \r\n\r\n

\r\nIn addition to the acute setting, several trials designed for the more chronic phase of coronary artery disease are also underway. These include:\r\n

    \r\n\r\n
  • 2 trials examing the role of a macrolide antibiotic in the prevention of coronary artery disease. These trials seek to examine the potential role of an infectious etiology (Chlamydia pneumoniae) in the pathogenesis of CAD.
  • \r\n
  • study comparing angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition versus angiotensin II receptor blockade versus the combination, in patients with left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction.\r\n
  • \r\n
  • Smaller projects designed to elucidate mechanisms of disease incluide a study examining the role of matrix metalloproteinases in the pathogenesis of the acute coronary syndromes, and a study using a validated ex vivo perfusion model of thrombogenesis to examine the antithrombotic effects of sveral medications.\r\n
  • \r\n\r\n

\r\nThe opportunities for clinical research change frequently. Those with an interest in participating in clinical research in cardiovascular disease should contact my office at (212) 241-4258 to inquire about the up to date list of ongoing investigations.\r\n
