Dr. Johanna Contreras was born and educated in Colombia, where she started her medical school education at the Universidad Industrial de Santander. During that time she cofounded the only peer-reviewed medical journal in Colombia edited by medical students to help access up to date information. She completed her medical training at the University of Miami, and moved to Boston where she did her Research Fellowship in Molecular Immunology at Harvard University.

She then completed her Internal Medicine Residency, Cardiovascular Fellowship, Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Fellowship at Tufts University. She became very interested in working toward eliminating healthcare disparities and joined the Clinical Translation program in the Sackler School at Tufts University in order to hone her clinical skills regarding population studies, community-participatory research and community-based healthcare. She completed work in multiple projects in Massachusetts towards this goal.

In 2011 Dr. Contreras moved to New York to become a full time Cardiology, Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Attending at The Mount Sinai Hospital/Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Currently she works in developing outreach clinics for minority patients, mainly Hispanics, within the five boroughs of New York City.

Her professional focus remains working towards improving minority patient health, eliminating cardiovascular health disparities and improving the access of minority patients to advanced heart failure therapies including mechanical heart devices and cardiac transplantation. She is an active member of several Hispanic associations including: American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and Hispanic Federation among others.]

Dr. Contreras is board certified in five subspecialties including: American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), American Board of Cardiovascular Disease (ABIM), National Board of Echocardiography, Board Cardiac Nuclear Medicine and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology (ABIM).
