Dr. Joseph Walsh was graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Medical School of Georgetown University. After a medical internship at SUNY Upstate and a residency at Boston City Hospital, he served his Ophthalmology Residency at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE). Upon graduation from NYEE in 1973, Dr. Walsh completed a Retinal Fellowship under the tutelage of Drs. George N. Wise and Paul Henkind at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After serving as Director of Residency Training, Director of the Retina Service, Vice-Chair and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at MMC/AECOM, Dr. Walsh was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department of both NYEE and New York Medical College in 1988 – 2013 and was named the Belinda Bingham Pierce and Gerald G. Pierce MD Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology in June 2009. As of May 2013, he has been Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus at NYEE and is also a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Walsh lectures as well as publishes articles in the field of Medical Retinal Diseases. He has served as President of The New York Society of Clinical Ophthalmology and was honored as the 45th Mark J. Schoenberg Memorial Lecturer to the society. He has served as President of the Ophthalmologic Laser Surgical Society. The American Academy of Ophthalmology, for which he served as Assistant and Acting Editor of its journal, Ophthalmology, and Chairman of Section X in the Academy Home Study Course, has honored him with the Honor and Senior Honor Award. The British Order of St. John has knighted him for his efforts on behalf of its Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and Dr. Walsh has served as Chancellor, Hospitaller of the American Priory of the Order of St. John and as a Governor for 14 years. Dr. Walsh is a member of The Macula Society, The New York Ophthalmology Society having served as Secretary-Treasurer and President, the Retina Society, the New York Academy of Medicine where he was the 1998 May Memorial Lecturer, the New York Society of Clinical Ophthalmology have in served as President and 46th The Mark J Schoenberg Memorial Lecturer and a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and Royal College of Ophthalmologists. In addition, he was the Delta Gamm Lecturer at the Houston Ophthalmology Society in April of 1998.
