Dr. Howe is Professor in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Preventive Medicine. She is also Associate Director/Education and Evaluation, VISN 3 Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the James J. Peters VAMC. Dr. Howe is the Director of the Consortium of New York Geriatric Centers, and is Director of the VISN 3 GRECC Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program.
Dr. Howe’s career interests include gerontology and geriatric education, curriculum development, education program evaluation, interprofessional teamwork, community-based services, geriatric workforce issues, rural health issues, and public policy. She is the co-founder and chair of the Board of Directors of Linkage House, a housing model with integrated social and health services for lower income older people in East Harlem which is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Dr. Howe has presented at numerous national meetings and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. She has edited or co-edited three books on aging and is the Editor-in-Chief of Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, the official journal of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education. Dr. Howe has served as an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education, was the President of the State Society on Aging of New York in 2005, on whose Board she continues to serve, and was a Board member and President in of the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers/National Association for Geriatric Education. She is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Gerontological Society of America.
