After graduating from Cornell University and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Dr. Gorfine began his career at Mount Sinai in 1978 as a resident in Internal Medicine. He completed the three-year residency program and was successful in obtaining certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine. At the completion of his medical residency, Dr. Gorfine began a four-and-a-half year surgical residency, capped by a six-month period as the Department's first Teaching Resident in Surgery. Dr. Gorfine devised and implemented a novel curriculum designed exclusively for the third-year surgical clerks. Dr Gorfine's teaching abilities were recognized by The Arthur H. Aufses, Sr., Prize in Surgery awarded to him in May 1985.

In July 1986, Dr. Gorfine left Mount Sinai for a one-year residency in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ferguson Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He returned to Mount Sinai to enter clinical practice in July 1987. Dr. Gorfine was certified by the American Board of Surgery (1986) and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (1987). He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1989 and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons in 1990. In 1995 he was the first surgeon in clinical practice to be elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Gorfine has been active in clinical research, most notably in the field of benign anal diseases. He performed the initial investigations concerning the use of nitroglycerin for the treatment of anal fissures and hemorrhoids. This work led to sole authorship of publications in Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and The New England Journal of Medicine . The use of nitroglycerin in the treatment of anal fissures has gained widespread popularity, and is considered by many the initial treatment of first choice.

In addition to this work, Dr. Gorfine is recognized as a leader in the field of surgery for inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Gorfine devised and maintains a prospective database of all patients in his practice undergoing restorative proctocolectomy. Dr. Gorfine and his practice were pioneers in the technique of restorative proctocolectomy without temporary diversion. He has published 33 peer reviewed articles and numerous book chapters.

Dr. Gorfine remains an active and respected member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He has served as a reviewer for their journal, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. He has also served on numerous national committees of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, including the Self Assessment Committees, and most recently, the Socioeconomic Committee and the Program Committee. Dr. Gorfine is a past President of The New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and he remains active as a Council member of that organization.

Dr. Gorfine has been popularly identified as a leader in the field of colonand rectal surgery. He has been recognized by NY Magazine as one of New York's "Top Doctors" for the past 13 years. He has been included in Castle-Connolly's "Top Doctors: New York Metro Edition"  and "America's Top Doctors" for many years.
